10 Ways Parents Unintentionally Harm Their Children


Parenting is a difficult task, and while we want the best for our children, none of us are void of error. Sometimes, no matter how good our intentions may be, we still cause harm to our children, but thankfully knowledge can be a powerful tool to help us to strive to be better.

While some of the following things may seem odd, read them through because I promise each item listed has to merit. Children are still in their development phases and because of that, things that we may deem as harmless can leave a lasting mark on them, inside and out. Don’t beat yourself up if you’ve done any of the following list items. We all make mistakes, but understanding the mistake can help you to avoid them in the future.

1. Putting toys in their baby’s bed.

While it may be tempting to place your little one’s favorite toys in their baby bed, it’s best not to. The reason being is that they may end up placing their face on the toy during their sleep, which could cause breathing issues.

2. Shaking them.

Every parent will have a night, or course of nights, in which it’s difficult to get their child to sleep. In turn, rocking them can become vigorous, because you want to do whatever you can to get them to sleep, and it can also be frustrating. However, shaking them too hard, even on accident, can cause shaking baby syndrome.

3. Over-sterilizing their environment.

We all want our children to be safe and free from harm, however, there is most definitely such a thing as too clean or too sterile. The reason behind this is that germs are necessary to build your child’s immune system. Without built immunity, they are more prone to asthma, skin rashes, and a host of other problems.

4. Forcing them to finish their plate.

Many of us were raised by parents or grandparents that would not let us leave the table without finishing our plate, no matter what our hunger cues were telling us. However, but forcing your child to eat when they aren’t hungry, you are teaching them how to overeat, which will inevitably give them a bad relationship with food. Additionally, they are likely to get sick eating more than they can stomach.

5. Comparing them to other children.

Comparing your child to anyone else is a bad idea. Not only does it cause them to doubt themselves, but it can also cause their self-esteem to plummet and create an inherent sense of feeling unworthy.

6. Not interacting with them enough.

Children need interaction from their parents and family to properly develop. Without the right amount of play and interaction, their development can become stunted. Additionally, it can lead to mental illness down the road.

7. Using a digital babysitter.

Far too often in modern times, parents reach for the convenience of a phone or tablet to soothe their children while they tend to other things. However, the one who pays the price for this – the ultimate price, is the child. Screen time inhibits your child’s ability to socialize normally, and it also stunts their brain development and ruins their attention span.

8. Forcing them to share.

While sharing is good, children, especially toddlers, are just beginning to learn their sense of what is theirs and also just learning to navigate throughout the world. It’s normal to not want your child to be greedy, but psychologists say that when you force them to share, you are raising them to be convenient. In turn, they learn that the desires of others are more important than their own.

9. Rewarding talent, not effort.

When you reward talent, or gifts, rather than their effort, you teach your child that they are special and entitled to rewards, rather than earning them. In turn, they may be less likely to put forth effort in much of anything, but instead, expect you to shower them with gifts because they are naturally talented. Psychologists say this sends a bad message.

10. Teaching them to be extremely polite.

We all want our children to be polite, however, when you teach them to be polite to everyone, no matter what their feelings are, you are sending a bad message. A social experiment was done to study child abductions, and 15 out of 17 children walked away with people who intended to abduct them. Why? Because they wanted to be polite. Rather than focusing on politeness, it may be best to focus on showing them what is safe and what isn’t and allowing them to trust themselves and their feelings about others.

A murder convict imprisoned in Karachi's Central Jail has proved his mark in the education sector by securing high marks in his intermediate examinations as a private candidate.

Naeem Shah secured an 86.73% with 954 marks out of 1,100 in intermediate examinations.

Shah was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder. He has served his sentence for 11 years now, maintaining good moral demeanour, according to the management of the Karachi Central Jail. Finding him among the top 20 students in the intermediate examinations, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan has offered him the Edhi Scholarship of Rs1 million. Naeem Shah earlier completed his preliminary education while living within the confines of the prison.

Hajj policy: Religious affairs ministry issues public alert for intending pilgrims

The government of Pakistan has called upon intending pilgrims to wait for the official announcement of the Hajj policy 2022 before giving their money to any tour operator. 

The Federal Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony issued a public alert after taking notice of complaints that some private Hajj tour operators are garnering money from intending pilgrims.

The ministry warned that it has not authorised any individuals, banks, hajj group organisers (HGOs) or agents to receive hajj applications and collect money on behalf of the ministry.

In its public alert notice, the religious ministry urged the masses to be careful of fraudsters, who are deceiving others in the name of Hajj. However, any such person will face consequences as they are operating illegally, it asserted.

"People are advised never to hand their passport and money to any individual or tour operator until the Hajj Policy 2022 is announced and published at the ministry's website, in newspapers and electronic media. They are allowed to submit their applications only after the ministry authorises banks and private tour operators to receive Hajj applications," the letter stated. 

The letter urged people to lodge their complaints on the ministry’s hajj helpline numbers 051-9205696051-9206980-82 against the HGOs, individuals in case they insist on collecting money and Hajj applications.

Pakistan faces alarming surge in diabetes cases: report

The prevalence of diabetes in Pakistan has increased significantly as 33 million adults are now living with diabetes in the country with an increase of 70 per cent, according to the International Diabetes Federation's (IDF).

The report, ranking the world’s top countries for a number of adults (20–79 years) with diabetes in 2021 has put Pakistan in third place with a total of 33 million, after China (141 million) and India (74 million).

One in four adults (26.7%) in Pakistan is living with diabetes - the highest national prevalence in the world, the report claimed and said that an additional 11 million adults in Pakistan have Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT), which places them at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Meanwhile, more than a quarter (26.9%) of adults living with diabetes in Pakistan remains undiagnosed, which means that undetected or inadequately treated diabetic people are at risk of serious and life-threatening complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and lower-limb amputation.

These factors result in poor quality of life and higher healthcare costs, the report added.

The IDF says that 537 million adults are now living with diabetes worldwide - a rise of 16% (74 million) since the previous IDF estimates in 2019.

"The rapidly rising level of diabetes in Pakistan presents a significant challenge to the health and well-being of individuals and families in the country," says Professor Abdul Basit, director of Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology at Baqai Medical University.

He said that this year marks 100 years since the discovery of insulin, noting that the milestone presents a unique opportunity to reflect on the impact of diabetes and highlights the urgent need to improve access to care for the millions affected. He said that an estimated one in two people with diabetes across the world who need insulin cannot access or afford it.

“We must do more to provide affordable and uninterrupted access to diabetes care for all in Pakistan, and around the world. Joint efforts are needed to improve the lives of people with diabetes and prevent the condition in those at high risk of developing it," Basit added.

Globally, 90% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. The rise in the number of people with type 2 is driven by a complex interplay of socio-economic, demographic, environmental and genetic factors while the key contributors include urbanization, an ageing population, decreasing levels of physical activity and increased levels of overweight and obesity.

Evidence suggests that type 2 diabetes can often be prevented, while early diagnosis and access to appropriate care for all types of diabetes can avoid or delay complications in people living with the condition.

Pakistanis lose Rs17.7 billion to online cryptocurrency fraud

 The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has detected an online fraud of USD100 million (Rs17.7 billion) using a cryptocurrency and issued a notice to the local representative of Binance to appear in person on Jan 10, local media reported.

Sharing details of the fraud, the Additional Director of the FIA cybercrime wing Imran Riaz on Friday said that those involved in the online fraud transferred the money abroad via cryptocurrency.

“We launched a probe after receiving complaints regarding a fraud involving billions of rupees being committed using nine online applications,” he said and added that they had sought answers in this regard from a representative of the cryptocurrency in Pakistan.

He shared that people invested between US$100 to US$80,000 in fraud applications. “Those who developed these apps were linked to cryptocurrency,” the FIA official said.

He said that they have sought details of all those linked to the fraud with the Binance cryptocurrency and their crypto accounts would be suspended. The FIA official further shared that cryptocurrency is being used in money laundering and terror financing.

According to details some mobile applications were offering Pakistanis to invest in the virtual currency. These applications were linked to Binance, the leading virtual platform for buying and selling Bitcoins and other similar cryptocurrencies.

However, these applications suddenly vanished and investment of around Rs17.7 billion made by Pakistanis were lost. The authorities said the unique way was adopted for fraudulent activity. The persons who launched the applications had connections with the crypto exchange.

The FIA issued the notice to Hamza Khan, the local representative of Binance. “During the inquiry, it was found that the fraudulent accounts of different applications namely, MCX, HFC, HTFOX, FXCOPY, OKMINI, BB001, AVG86C, BX66, 91fp, TASKTOK, were linked with Binance wallets,” the officials said.

It is noted that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) through a circular issued in 2018 informed the general public that it had not authorised or licensed any individual or entity for the issuance, sale, purchase, or investment in any such virtual currencies, coins, tokens in Pakistan.

Recently, a report released by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) revealed that Pakistanis had a staggering $20 billion worth of assets in cryptocurrencies.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has also launched a probe into the investment in the cryptocurrencies to identify investors and their source of investment. During a Sindh High Court hearing, a petitioner had on April 6, 2018 stated that the SBP imposed a ban on the use of digital currency despite developing countries are earning significant revenue from the cryptocurrency which doesn’t pose any threat to national interests.

The study reads “more intelligent individuals are more likely to be nocturnal, getting up later in the morning and going to bed later in the evening, than less intelligent individuals.”

5. You question everything.

Intelligent people don’t accept anything at face value. Sophie von Stum from the University of Edinburgh in the UK co-authored a study called “The Hungry Mind: Intellectual Curiosity Is the Third Pillar of Academic Performance” says that “If you’re intellectually curious, you’ll go home, you’ll read the books. ” She also explained that she felt like the “curious ones” had the most potential for development.
